Kansas Board of Regents receives Strada Education Network grant to expand the Kansas Micro-Internships Program
(Topeka, Kan.) - A new initiative by the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) will expand the Kansas Micro-Internships program to seven Kansas community and technical colleges this year thanks to a $400,000 grant from the Strada Education Network.
The Kansas Micro-Internships (KMI) program was created in February of 2021 to support the Board’s Building a Future strategic plan and the Kansas Department of Commerce’s aim to connect businesses, job seekers, educational institutions and training providers to ensure the state’s workforce is equipped to meet industry needs and to help create economic success for Kansas.
Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, professional assignments in business, communications, education, finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, research, social media and many other areas. These projects can be completed remotely year-round and typically range from 10 to 40 hours of work.
The program benefits students by removing obstacles of transportation, relocation and fixed work schedules common to traditional on-site internships and introduces them to many more potential careers and employers. It also benefits employers who need immediate on-demand project help in addition to increasing their talent pipeline.
“We are excited to support the KMI program,” said Dr. Courtney McBeth, Strada’s Chief Program Officer. “This program is a great example of how community colleges and local employers, working together, have a unique ability to meet regional workforce needs and boost employment and earnings outcomes for students.”
The $400,000 grant from the Strada Education Network will provide more support for Hutchinson Community College, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Neosho County Community College, Seward County Community College, Flint Hills Technical College, Manhattan Area Technical College, and the Washburn Institute of Technology to connect their students with employers in their respective service areas.
