REGENTS THANK SHERRER FOR HIS SERVICE TO KANSAS

(TOPEKA) – Today Kansas Board of Regents’ Vice Chairman Ed McKechnie, of Arcadia, issued the following statement upon Chairman Gary Sherrer’s resignation, effective today, from the Board of Regents:

“The Board thanks Gary for his years of service to the state’s higher education system and to the people of Kansas. He accomplished much during his term on the Board, and it’s safe to say he leaves the system in better shape than he found it. He’s been a friend and we wish him well.”

Sherrer, of Overland Park, was appointed to the Board by Governor Kathleen Sebelius in 2007. He was the 45th and longest-serving Lieutenant Governor in Kansas history, and he served as the Board’s Chairman from 2010 to 2011 and as the Board’s Vice Chairman from 2009 to 2010. Board accomplishments during his term include: the adoption of Foresight 2020, a 10-year strategic plan for the state’s higher education system; the ability for the Board to establish state university admissions standards; new state university admissions standards; implementation of state university employee background checks; a new state university CEO annual evaluation process; annual Regents visits to all community college and technical college campuses; a systemwide economic impact study showing the value of the state’s investment in higher education; the design of the Kansas Commitment, which led to the Legislature’s recent approval of a state university engineering initiative; and the creation of an Articulation and Transfer Task Force to enhance the transfer of academic credits from community colleges and technical colleges to the state universities.

The nine-member Kansas Board of Regents, founded in 1925 and established in the Kansas Constitution, is the governing board of the six state universities and the statewide coordinating board for the state’s 32 public higher education institutions (six state universities, one municipal university, 19 community colleges, and six technical colleges).
